A Glitch and a Fix for iWeb 09

I have just gone though a satisfactory — if tedious — two-hour session with an Apple Tech in California.

My problem: I had just completed my annual Christmas newsletter in iWeb 09. The composition of text, photos, colour panels and sound went like clock work. I published to my Apple MobileMe account. Worked a couple of times like a charm. Now I was ready to send to about 125 people in my Address Book. It crashed.

Meg of Macs@Work did some research and fund that the crash: “iWeb quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordProcessing plugin” was a frequently-reported problem. She recommended I call Apple Canada’s tech support. In turn, they transferred me to the Apple Techs in California for an all-afternoon session.

I gather this occurs often enough that the tech wanted his engineering geniuses to look at it and try to find out why crashes occurred. He felt at one point that it would require sending my desktop back to Apple for adjustments.

But he did get me back on track.

Whether the root problem in iWeb 09 was corrected, he did have me clean out my copy of iWeb 08 which was still in the computer. I do not know why I retained ‘08 when I installed iWeb 09 (as part of iLife 09) but I have a recollection I was either told or read that some feature of ‘08 were still necessary. The tech said that the ‘09 upgraded everything and replaced ‘08. We also did a reinstall of iWeb 09.

Therefore, if you still have any part of iWeb 08 or earlier lurking about, it should be eliminated when iWeb ‘09 is installed. Take it out!

My problem was that ’08 corrupted one of nine pages and caused the freeze.

It now works like it is supposed to do.

Part or all of this problem seems to revolve around font issues. See this link for more details, but the short version seems to be disable or delete the Hoefler Text font, and any other duplicate fonts you may have. Click on that link for more info.
