[Get a load of this!](http://www.eff.org/Privacy/printers/)
The U.S. government seems to have talked printer manufacturers into making their colour laser printers ‘watermark’ every document they produce – including model, serial number and time of day….
Thanks to [Fred at MugInfomanager](http://www.user-groups.net/info/0510-24.html) for the intial link to this story.

Hi folks:
November 1st is the first Tuesday of the month. Our MMUG meeting will be held in the library at Huntsville High School which is on Brunel Road close to Heritage Place and the Centennial Centre. Park close to the main entrance (which in relation to Brunel Road is at the back) enter through the main doors, go around the main office to the stairs and up to the 2nd Floor. Turn left at the top of the stairs and the library is down the hall on your left. There are signs so you can’t get lost.
See you there at 7:30 p.m.
Don McCormick will be showing us some very basic strategies for storing and editing digital photographs with iPhoto and Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Think about what else you might want to learn and what you’ve learned recently that you might want to share. We all own the group and are responsible to make these meetings useful for everyone. David Harris suggested that if everyone at each meeting goes away having learned at least one thing that is going to make their digital life better, then that’s a successful meeting.

See you there. New members always welcome.

We’ve talked a lot about using an external harddrive as a backup device in the last couple of meetings.
(ok – more like I’ve made a few sermons on the subject) :-)
[Mac World has just completed a great external harddrive comparison](http://www.macworld.com/2005/10/reviews/firewiremain/index.php?pf=1) that’s now available on-line. It talks about the various options and makes recommendations. If you were thinking about buying one, this is a great starting point.

Here’s a cute trick. I’ve enabled [a gVisit site visitor map](http://www.gvisit.com/map.php?sid=65ba146f9e498cc71404ca2736962526).
What’s that you ask? It’s an idea I swiped from [Rod Martin's blog](http://www.rodmartin.net/news/2005/10/07/gvisitcom-adds-google-map-locations-to-a-blogs-visits/).
It shows you on a map where the last 20 visitors to this website are from.
Thought I’d try it out here too. Thanks for idea Rod!

[Looks like Apple is breaking some new ground in the software market](http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/10/19/aperture/index.php?lsrc=mwrss).
The professional photographer is an Apple user mainstay of course. It will be interesting to see how they react to this. Any of our local users care to comment?

Was just [reading Rod Martin's blog on the Video iPod](http://www.rodmartin.net/news/2005/10/14/the-new-video-ipod-that-wasnt-supposed-to-be/).
Got a good chuckle – he’s got a link to last year’s presentation where Jobs says video on the iPod makes no sense :-)
How come none of the main stream media are asking him to come clean on this?

Here’s an angle I hadn’t thought of – [T.V. shows purchased from iTunes are commercial free](http://today.reuters.com/news/NewsArticle.aspx?type=technologyNews&storyID=uri:2005-10-18T191934Z_01_SIB868919_RTRUKOC_0_US-MEDIA-IPOD-ADVERTISING.xml&pageNumber=0&summit=) and the advertisers aren’t exactly thrilled :-)
Put this together with PVR’s like the Tivo, and if I’m a marketing guy I’d be thinking it’s time to change the nature of my business.

Everyone should grab a copy of this week’s Time Magazine (October 24). The cover is of Steve Jobs. Time describes him as “the man who always seems to know what’s next”. A good profile inside.

Apple has made three announcements in the last week or so [ all while I was on vacation :-) ]
If you missed ‘em too – here’s three articles from Macworld that look like nice quick summaries.

* [iTunes 6 does video - but no movies yet](http://playlistmag.com/news/2005/10/17/itunesfaq/index.php?lsrc=mwrss)
* [The new iMac](http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/10/17/imacfaq/index.php?lsrc=mwrss)

Our first meeting of the year will be happening at MMUG member David Harris’ photography studio called Pine Dog Gallery, 518 Griffin Lodge Road. Take the Griffin Lodge Road exit from Hwy 11 and follow the road until you see the clearly marked Pine Dog Gallery sign on the right hand side. The meeting is at 7:30. Focus will be on the world of digital photography on the Mac. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn from a professional who is willing to share his wisdom and experience with beginners like most of us.
